Rodent Infestation in County Cork
Cork, Ireland — I want to warn homeowners across County Cork about an increase in rodent activity this winter. I’m Erik, owner of Your Local Pest Buster. In my rodent control work in Cork, I am seeing rats and mice cause more problems than usual in 2025/2026.
Most of the issues I am seeing are linked to poor sewage pipe conditions, manholes in disrepair, and gaps at the bottoms of houses. Bird feed left around the neighborhood often attracts rodents. In terraced homes, the entry points are frequently not on the client’s property but at neighboring houses. Rodents travel through wall cavities and can affect multiple homes in a row.
Many homeowners only contact a professional once the problem has escalated. By the time people call me, rodents have often caused damage to electrical cabling or water pipes, which can lead to costly structural damage. Early intervention is critical.
Professional help is the safest and most effective way to address rodent infestations. Improper DIY methods can make the problem worse and put residents at risk of injury or of diseases such as leptospirosis.
Signs of rats and mice to look out for
The earlier you spot rats or mice, the easier they are to deal with. These are the signs to look out for:
- Droppings in presses, along walls or in the attic
- Scratching or scurrying in walls, ceilings or under floors, usually at night
- Gnawed food packaging, chewed cables or insulation
- Greasy rub marks along skirting boards and pipes
- Gaps around pipes and at the bottom of walls, often with droppings nearby
If you spot any of these, call me early rather than waiting for the problem to spread to the walls, attic or next door.
